When it comes to supplements, many companies try to sell you things that do not work, but these are some supplements that actually do work.
Raw Meaty Bones (Joint Support):
Glucosamine and chondroitin are what constitute cartilage, essential for joints. Glucosamine is a building block for molecules called glycosaminoglycans that are part of the structure of cartilage. Chondroitin is a component of cartilage that plays a role in its resistance to compression.
Give your dog manageable raw, uncooked bones and let them chip away at them overtime. This is the ultimate toothbrush. The best thing for your dog's dental health are uncooked bones.
Top tip: if you have never given your dog a bone, start with something manageable and easy to chomp on (a chicken wing), and then graduate them overtime to something a bit more complex (bigger knuckle bone).
Salt and Honey:
When it comes to rehydration, water and salt (sodium) are lost. In order for the body to rehydrate with key electrolytes. What many people fail to understand is that for the body to be able to absorb sodium efficiently you need glucose to go with it. For example, hospital IVs will contain glucose and salt in them, along with other nutrients, such as potassium, which is a lot less important when it comes to rehydration.
So what we are going to do is pair sodium (salt) with glucose (sugar).
How do we do this? On a 1:1 molecular weight basis. This would for example be 1/4 teaspoon of salt and 3 teaspoons of honey.
It's important you obviously check your dog's weight, overall diet and your own competency and knowledge before you get into your dog's rehydration. Make sure you're not taking this advice lightly.
Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root (digestive support)
This is ideal for short-term upsets or ongoing long-term tummy trouble and can help quickly soothe your pet's digestive tract. Its gentle action means that it is suitable for pets of all ages, including weaning puppies and kittens (and us humans too).
I mix this with my dog's raw dog food. If your dog is not raw fed, give them some wet food and mix it with it.
Turmeric (joints, pain)
Because curcumin and other ingredients in turmeric might decrease swelling, it is often used to treat conditions that involve pain and inflammation. People commonly use turmeric for osteoarthritis.
You can get it from your local health shop.
Eggs:
Eggs contain all the nutrients and vitamins to create life. They are also rich in protein. Feed raw, with the shell for added calcium. 2-3 times per week. It's a cheap and great addition to your dog's diet.
